Lost wax carving is the first stage of the lost wax casting process. It involves shaping a piece of jeweller’s wax into your desired design. The wax model is then cast into metal using the lost wax casting technique:

• Carve your design in wax.
• Create a mould around the wax model.
• Melt (or “lose”) the wax out of the mould.
• Pour molten metal into the cavity where the wax once was.
• Break the mould to reveal your new metal piece.

• Wax carving tools (metal or wood double-ended tools)
• Rotary tool (Dremel) with burrs
• Needle files
• Fine grit sandpaper
• Heat pen or alcohol lamp (for smoothing and fusing wax)
• Measuring tools (calipers, rulers, ring sizers)

Tips for Beginners

• Start simple. Begin with a plain ring band or pendant before moving on to complex designs.
• Plan your design. Sketch your idea and measure carefully—it’s easier to remove wax than to add it back.
• Practice textures. Try stippling, engraving, and smoothing techniques on scrap wax.
• Remember shrinkage. Metal shrinks slightly during casting, so size your wax model accordingly.
