The Art of Lost Wax Carving: Turning Wax into Wearable Treasures

August 20, 2025

Jewellery has been created using the lost wax casting method for thousands of years. From ancient Egyptian amulets to Renaissance rings, this technique has stood the test of time because of its versatility, precision, and artistry. At the heart of this process is wax carving—the step where imagination meets craftsmanship.

At Jewellery Collective, we love introducing students to this ancient art form in our hands-on workshops. Whether you’re dreaming of a delicate pendant, a chunky statement ring, or something entirely unique, learning lost wax carving opens up endless possibilities in jewellery design.

What is Lost Wax Carving?

Lost wax carving is the first stage of the lost wax casting process. It involves shaping a piece of jeweller’s wax into your desired design. The wax model is then cast into metal using the lost wax casting technique:

  • Carve your design in wax.
  • Create a mould around the wax model.
  • Melt (or “lose”) the wax out of the mould.
  • Pour molten metal into the cavity where the wax once was.
  • Break the mould to reveal your new metal piece.

This method allows jewellers to capture incredibly fine details—perfect for creating unique, one-of-a-kind jewellery.

Why Wax Carving is So Popular

  • Creative freedom: You can carve, sculpt, or even add textures that are difficult to achieve with metal alone.
  • Accessibility: Wax is soft, easy to shape, and inexpensive—perfect for experimentation.
  • Precision: Wax can be worked to incredibly fine details, which are then perfectly replicated in the final metal piece.
  • Customisation: Every piece starts as a blank block of wax, meaning no two creations are ever exactly alike.

Essential Tools for Lost Wax Carving

Getting started doesn’t require a huge investment. Here are the key tools we use in the studio and recommend for beginners:

  • Wax carving wax (blocks, tubes, or sheets)
  • Jeweller’s saw frame & blades
  • Wax files and rasps
  • Scalpel or craft knife
  • Wax carving tools (metal or wood double-ended tools)
  • Rotary tool (Dremel) with burrs
  • Needle files
  • Fine grit sandpaper
  • Heat pen or alcohol lamp (for smoothing and fusing wax)
  • Measuring tools (calipers, rulers, ring sizers)

Tips for Beginners

  • Start simple. Begin with a plain ring band or pendant before moving on to complex designs.
  • Plan your design. Sketch your idea and measure carefully—it’s easier to remove wax than to add it back.
  • Practice textures. Try stippling, engraving, and smoothing techniques on scrap wax.
  • Remember shrinkage. Metal shrinks slightly during casting, so size your wax model accordingly.
